Abstract:

This collection consists of George Sterling manuscript materials collected by Rudolph Blaettler. It includes incoming correspondence from Mary Austin, Douglas Fairbanks, Frank Harris, Charmian London, Edgar Lee Masters, Blanche Partington, and Mary Craig Sinclair; outgoing correspondence primarily to Mrs. Rose Travis but also to Carey McWilliams, Xavier Martinez, Joseph Noel, and Clark Ashton Smith. Also included in the collection is a diary written sporadically in Carmel from 1905 to 1910, a manuscript entitled Chinese Laundry Chits of George Sterling; a Carmel guestbook; A Tribute to George Sterling by Clark Ashton Smith (from Overland Monthly); an annotated copy of The Carmel Wheel; and miscellaneous notes.

George Sterling, a poet, was born in Sag Harbor, Long Island, New York and moved to California in 1890. He had friendships with many literary figures including his mentor Ambrose Bierce, Jack London and Clark Ashton Smith. In 1905 he moved to Carmel-by-the-Sea and many authors and artists followed him here. He also kept a room at the Bohemian Club in San Francisco where he took his life in November 1926. Rudolph Blaettler was a collector.
